"Our daughter, Alicia, graduated this past May 23rd.!
I'm so excited!!!! Several years ago we began a journey with God in building a Family Life and Education Building at Cherry Grove Baptist Church in Mittie, a small community in Southwest Louisiana. Believing this was God's will, we jumped in! We had a good amount of the funds needed to begin with. We wound up borrowing to finish up the building. We took out a 5 year loan about 2 years ago. But God has been so good and so generous to us!! He raised up men and women who are no longer members here, who shared the same vision as we did, and as of this month the building as been paid in full!!!! We are excited about this as you can tell. Because of the timing, we've decided we want to "kick" the new year off right, by burning the note in a special service. So on Sunday, January 2, at 11:00 we are going to do just that!!! God bless each and every one of you!!! Ron
After being unscathed in Hurricane Katrina, the Butlers were not quite so fortunate with Hurricane Rita. Ron shared the following with me after I had asked about their welfare, and he has given me permission to include the information here:
We did stay at home throughout the storm. Actually, we stayed in our Family Life Center with 48 others from our community and an additional 20 from the Salvation Army (who'd come up to weather the storm with us). What a blessing to have them with us. They came in and set us up as a shelter. It was so neat to see them in action! They brought a huge generator that kept us in lights and fans after the electricity went out. They cooked meals for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday noon. We thank God for His mercy. While our parish was hit hard with a lot of damage, no lives were lost. I have one member who lost their home (a trailer) when a large tree fell and crushed it. Another member had a tree fall on their home and damage it significantly. And another that had their roof ripped off. We did have some damage around the church and parsonage, but we're O.K.!! Thanks for your prayers. We'll need them as we begin to rebuild. Ron
Just wanted to give you a little update on things down here. I have no less than 5 families in my congregation that either lost homes or have significant damages. Most of us have damages ranging from a few shingles, to broken windows, downed trees, broken fences, etc. The church received water damages I didn't know about our last communication. We have had to tear all the carpet out of the sanctuary. Some carpet in my daughter's room and in the living room also got wet and had to go. Because of the amount of time we were without electricity, we had no way of getting the water out. Carpets were mildewing. Because of the water damage to window sills, lower walls in places, doors, and a few of the pews, and some leaks we're noticing now in the roof and ceiling, it looks as if we are in for a major renovation of the sanctuary. As for the house we'll have to replace the flooring. Don't know what else, besides caulking windows. And of course the loss of all cold food items. It's been unbelievable the amount of "carnage" in our parish. Our district State Rep. is a deacon in our church. He told me we have no less than 75 homes damaged in this area. Outside of major inconveniences however, everyone is safe!!! Praise the Lord for that. The last member of our church to receive electricity finally got power on Saturday evening! And with FEMA and Red Cross now balking on promises of help for everyone - many of us are not guaranteed we're going to get help with replacing some of the things we've lost. Looks like, because our house is insured by the church and has some content coverage, and because our house is in relatively good shape (liveable) - we're not going to be eligible for any financial assistance of any kind. But if so, OK. God is ultimately our Provider. And it is in Him we place our trust and confidence!!! Thank you for your prayers. They are much needed by many people in southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas. Ron
